What to expect

Muhaymin shares more information on what to expect on a typical day working as a teaching assistant.

All teaching assistant placements are a little different depending on the needs of the school, but I would normally arrive 15-20 minutes before school started, around 8.30 am, to catch up with the teacher and go over the plans for the day.

I’ve worked as a teaching assistant in the classroom and one-to-one support roles in mainstream and SEN (Special Education Needs) schools and the school will always try to follow a set routine to help the children focus which helps allow you to settle in and feel comfortable in your role.

Your days are pretty structured with the teacher leading the class through their set lesson plans while you are on hand to support the children, or a particular child in one-to-one roles. For the children who require additional support, this time can be spent in the classroom or a different room depending on their needs.

I always found that the day flew by when working in a school. Working with the children is the best part of the job. You have a front seat to seeing them grow and develop day after day. It’s cliché to say, but every day is different when you’re working in a school and there is always a magical moment to enjoy each day.

School finishes any time between 3.00 pm and 3.30 pm. After that, I would stay behind for a quick debrief with the teacher and any other teaching assistants in the classroom. We’ll review the day and make plans for tomorrow. Most days I’ll leave the school any time between 4.00 pm and 4.30 pm. Some schools offer the chance to cover after-school provisions which can be a great way to earn a little extra money.

Ongoing support

I would have regular catch-up calls with the team in the Inspiring Teaching office outside of school times to answer any questions, offer support, and generally check in with how I’m getting on.
