We sat down with Inspiring Teaching’s very own Muhaymin Hoque who worked as a Teaching Assistant before transitioning to our office team as a Recruitment Consultant.
Starting your journey
Muhaymin shares his top tips for those considering a career as a Teaching Assistant.
Experience can come from anywhere Many of our staff are in a similar position to myself and come to us without childcare experience. Don’t let that be a barrier for you. I work with staff from a range of previous job backgrounds - from care homes to Chinese restaurants and sales to security. We look for transferrable skills and a positive attitude more than anything.
Train for success We provide staff with all the support and training needed before they ever enter a classroom. This is not only training courses but also sharing information about the school and classroom environments to make sure that you feel 100% comfortable and confident walking into your first placement. The training offered covered a lot of different subjects that are important within schools that I hadn’t thought about. Things like safeguarding, anti-radicalisation and Prevent training taught me different signs and behaviours to look out for. The training was delivered online which made it really easy to follow and understand.
The training really set me up for working in the school environment and working with children in general. I’d definitely recommend for people to look into this training, even if you’re not working in schools, as it was so informative and helpful.
Show your positivity Applying for any new job can be daunting so go in there with optimism. We know that a lot of people applying will be coming to us without experience so the main thing that I look for is a positive attitude. Personally, I love seeing candidates who are friendly, kind, and proactive because I know from experience that’s what schools look for in a Teaching Assistant.
